Having carpets in your home is an easy way to create a more beautiful and comfortable living space. Carpet provides warmth and is one of those elements that transforms a house into a real home. However, there are downsides to having carpet. Maintenance is one of those, and keeping carpets looking presentable while protecting them from wear is a major challenge for any homeowner. One of the most common situations that homeowners find themselves in with a carpeted home, is staining on their carpet, and some of the most common type of stains are food stains.
Some foods stains can seem almost impossible to clean from your carpet, but what many don’t realize is that even before you need to call in the carpet cleaning professionals to your home in Nottingham, there are some simple and effective home remedies that you can try first. Today we’re going to take a look at one of our favourites.
REMOVING RED FOOD STAINS FROM YOUR CARPET AND PREVENTING CARPET STAINS
Red coloured food stains, especially oil based ones can be some of the most difficult to remove. Here’s what you should try first before you call the professionals.
You will need about a tbsp. of baking soda, depending on the size of the stain, some light coloured cloths or old towels, some dishwashing detergent, warm water, and a little bit of white vinegar.
Start by removing any solid pieces of food from your carpet, and then blotting the area lightly with a clean towel. Continue this until there’s no visible trace of the stain transferring to your towel.
Take your baking soda and mix it with some detergent and warm water in a bowl. This solution will help to raise the stain out of the carpet, without damaging the fabric. Soak the towel and wring it out without completely drying it, and then blot the stain, replacing the towel once it becomes visibly soiled.
Repeat the same thing again, but this time make a new solution that is one part vinegar and one part warm water with a little detergent mixed in. This helps in preventing carpet stains. Blot the stain, you should at this stage see that most of the stain has come out of the carpet. Be careful not to wipe the stain at any point, as this will help the stain to settle in.
By now the stain should be mostly removed, but there may be a small trace left in your carpet. If this is the case, use some pure alcohol with a clean cloth, pour the alcohol on to the cloth until it is wet but not dripping, and repeat the blotting process again, replacing the towel and repeating if required. Even if the entire mark is not gone, you’ve gone a long way toward preventing carpet stains from permanently becoming a part of your carpet.
At this point all visible traces of the stain should be removed. If you haven’t managed to completely remove the stain, especially if the stain has already set, then it may be time to get a professional in.
